Taming the Princess Page 2

“Does that feel good?” he asked her.

  “Yes…”

He kissed her neck, his hands caressing her as he moved above her. Evelyn shuddered underneath him, the fire simmering inside her. Her nails clawed into his skin as the feeling grew. Tiny moans began to escape from her throat. She buried her head in his shoulder, muffling a cry of pleasure as the orgasm swept through her, taking her for an intense ride over the wave of ecstasy. Silas groaned deeply, filling her with his warmth as she squeezed him tight. He took her face in his hands, kissing her passionately as they rode out the swell of pleasure.

Evelyn lay wrapped up in Silas’ arms on the cold floor, her body drenched in sweet warmth, her skin humming. He kissed the back of her neck and she sighed.

“That was lovely,” she said wistfully.

“I’m glad you approved, Princess,” he said in a teasing tone. He kissed her shoulder.

  “I very much did.”

“Princess,” he said. “We should get you back to your chambers.”

  “Please call me Evelyn.”

“In private,” he said. “But respectfully, I must still call you Princess as your guard captain.”

She rolled over to look him in the eye. “You’ve taught me a lot tonight, Silas. I think you’ve taught me more than anyone I’ve ever known. I think I truly understand what respect means now because I hold a lot for you. You did what you did tonight thinking that I would order your death once released.”

  “That is true.”

“That took courage. It also took mercy to not show me the same cruelty that I’ve shown everyone else.”

“I don’t have it in me to be cruel – not even to someone who has been cruel themselves.”

  “I thank you for that.”

Silas ran his hand across the raised welts on Evelyn’s backside. “You can always count on me, Princess.” He smiled, kissing her. He stood and held out his hand. “Now we need to get you cleaned up and back to your chambers.”

Taking his hand, she allowed him to pull her to her feet. “Yes, Captain.”

  OFFERING HERSELF TO THE EARL

  by Sandra Sinclair

The Earl gestured to an empty chair. “May I offer you some sherry?”

Beatrice thought about it for a moment and then nodded. “I would be grateful, my lord.” It had been very cold outside, after all, and she felt as if she needed the liquid to help warm her and also strengthen her fortitude.

He filled a glass for her and then handed it to her. “You must forgive my butler for acting as he had. The circumstances, after all, are a bit unusual.”

She took the glass. “I am well aware, my lord that I am not supposed to be here and trust me, I would rather not be. Unfortunately, certain circumstances from earlier tonight have warranted my visit.”

“Have they?” He raised an eyebrow at her as he sat on the chair across her.

“Please do not feign ignorance, my lord,” she said after taking a sip of the sherry. “I am aware of the appointment you have with my brother at dawn.”

“And clearly you disapprove of it.”

“Well, I am not aware of what has led to it,” she said. “I imagine it has something to do with the fact that my brother does not handle his alcohol well and is a poor loser when it comes to games of cards. He does not lose often, you see, since my father taught him well.”

“You think he accused me of cheating and I called him out because of that?”

“Regardless, it seems that he has insulted you and so a duel is set to take place.”

“And you intend to do something about it?” he asked her.

“I have come, my lord, risking danger and my reputation, to ask for your forgiveness in his behalf,” she answered.

He frowned. “I’m sure you’re aware, my lady, that some matters cannot be resolved by mere words.”

“He has offended you by mere words, has he not? Why can the offense not be amended by the same?”

“It is not how society works.”

“I was not aware that you adhered to the rules of society strictly, my lord.”

“I have no control of it, either.”

She set down her glass. “I only ask, my lord, that you let this matter go and…” She swallowed. “I am prepared to do anything to ensure such an outcome.”

He paused to regard her with amusement. “You would do anything for your brother?”

“He is the only family I have left, my lord,” she answered. “And I have heard that you are accounted a fair shot.”

“So you are willing to do anything just for me to call the duel off?”

  “Precisely, my lord.”

For a moment, they sat in silence, Beatrice clasping her hands nervously on her lap as she waited for the Earl’s answer to her proposition.

“Very well,” he finally said. “I agree to your proposition.”

  “I am grateful, my lord.”

“Do not thank me yet.” He stood up and finished the rest of his brandy in one gulp before setting his glass down and walking out of the room. “Come with me.”

She hesitated briefly, fear gripping her, but she shook it off and followed him out of the study and up the stairs to a bedchamber, which she supposed was a spare one for guests since it did not seem as if it had been occupied recently.

He set down the candlestick he had picked up somewhere along the way on top of the dresser and then sat on the chair beside the window. She stood beside the bed, having a hint of what he wanted but unsure of what to do.

“Have you been with any man before?” he asked.

She shook his head. “I am unmarried, my lord and I am not one who seeks the embrace of a man without the bonds of marriage.” She thought about adding that she had not yet had the fortune of receiving any marriage offers since her first Season four years ago, her dowry being only decent at best and her looks, tho
ugh not bad, unable to compare to the richer, fairer eligible ladies of the ton, but did not. She did not regret it, after all, and had in fact, been content to resign herself to spinsterhood and watch over the children her brother would produce from his marriage.

“And yet you are offering yourself up to me.” It was a statement, not a question.

“As you have said, the circumstances are not usual.”

“No, they are not,” he agreed. “And I assure you, my lady, that I am no ordinary man.”

She shivered at the words but tried to hide it.

  “Dispense with the gown.”

The words were clearly not a request but a command and so she complied, trying to still her trembling fingers as she worked at the stays of her gown. It took her a while, but finally she was able to peel the bodice of the silk gown off, followed by the skirt along with the layers of petticoats under it so that she was simply in her corset and chemise, drawers and stockings.

  “Let your hair down.”

Again, she obeyed, freeing the mass of brown curls on her head from the pins and ribbons that had been holding them up so that they cascaded past her shoulders.

He looked at her, his eyes glistening with approval.

“There is no need to stare at me, my lord,” Beatrice said. “I know I am no beauty.”

“I beg to disagree,” he said as he rose from his seat, approaching her. He ran his fingers through her soft hair before brushing them against her cheek, which for some reason, suddenly felt warmer at his touch. Then, he moved behind her and began to unlace her corset.

  To be continued....
